Well, I'll be honest. I'm pretty disappointed! I had fairly high hopes for these discs, and I really feel that they dropped the
ball where performance is concerned. Yes, the Plextor Premium was able to burn them error free, but it almost always had to
reduce the burn speed in mid-burn process in order to do so! The LiteON was able to get usable results when burning them at 24x,
but required much lower speeds in order to get any kind of quality from its' burns. I really can't find any justification for
this.
Technically Speaking: Technically speaking, these discs look like they have some sort of balance issues. I know that the Plextor Premium has a little extra support for keeping media properly balanced at high speeds then most "normal" CD burners, which would explain the better results when the media was burned at higher speeds. Unfortunately, most people do not have Plextor Premium drives, they have standard CD burners, usually whatever happens to be cheapest when they go shopping, and these sort of drives will often not have the support needed to burn this disc properly at higher speeds. Even as it was, the Plextor Premium exhibited difficulty burning at higher speeds, since it had to reduce the burn speed in 2 of the 3 tests done with the drive. According to the tests that I performed on this media: The optimal write speed on the Plextor Premium is 8x Speeds to avoid on the Plextor Premium: None (52x recording untested) The optimal write speed on the LiteON 48125W is 8x Speeds to avoid on the LiteON 48125W: 24x-48x (12x-16x untested) The Score: Plextor Premium: In combination with the Plextor Premium drive, I give this media a 7/10. Overall the writing quality was ok, but the drive had to reduce the burn speed on almost every occasion in order to accomplish this. LiteON 48125W: In combination with the LiteON 48125W drive, I give this media a 4.5/10. I was completely disappointed with the results of these tests. Nothing above 24x was even usable, and even 24x recording produced some dangerously poor results! Sorry Ernie, I wish I had a better review for you! |
